Engaged Learning for Technology
Drug Awareness Project
Subject and Level: Health 8th Grade
Learner Description-Heterousgenous grouping, twenty-five students to a class, special needs students, ESL and LD students.
Overview: Each student will choose a drug to research and presenting information by using technology resources.
What will be taught? Students will be able to identify how the drug affects the body and a description of the drug type.
What will students do and learn? Students will cooperatively search drug information of selected Internet resources and book resources from the library.
Rationale: Why questions? Purpose
Students will be able to collectively gather information that will support why drugs are so harmful to the human body.
I would teach this unit because student self-discovery is the most powerful way for a student to learn material rather than teacher-based. This is an engaged learning lesson because this is student driven and the students will make a choice how to convey the drug information to their peers.
Technology provides students with an endless source of information on prevention and awareness. Technology will also be a part of the decision on how to present the information to other classmates.
This is meaningful to student because the information will directly affect real-life decisions why not to use drugs and how harmful drugs can be.
Goals-Content, Content and Social-the What Questions
What new attributes do you expect students to gain?
Students will have a better understanding of a certain type of drug because they become the expert on the effects of the drug. Students will understand why drug abuse is harmful to the total well-being of a person- physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
State Goal 23. Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development.
Why This Goal Is Important: To achieve healthful individual development, students need to understand human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, stages of growth and development, avoidance of harmful actions and the characteristics of good health habits. Early learners begin with basic recognition of body systems and growth stages. As students progress, they understand how systems work together and how individual actions affect health. As they themselves grow and develop, students can learn to enhance the process throughout their school years and later life. Explain the effects of health-related actions on the body systems.
Learning Questions:
How? Write these drugs on board and have students choose what drug to research.
Tobacco
Alcohol
Marijuana
Ecstasy
Hallucinogens
Narcotics
Cocaine
Steroids
Inhalants
Create cooperative groups from Choices.
Library Resources and Handout Drug Project Worksheet and Drug Note Sheet
Four-Five Days Library to complete Projects: Two Days Research and Third-Fifth Day Project Idea such as poster, skit, I-movie, power point, brochure etc.
Student Assessment:
Students will be expected to complete the drug information sheet and require to fill out the three resources used to collect information.
Students will receive daily points for cooperatively working with other group members-staying on task.
Novices-students completed drug information sheet, only two resources and poster of information.
Practioners-students completed drug information sheet, more than three resources, drug presentation reciting information of drug information sheet
Experts-students complete drug information sheet, more than three resources, apply sheet to presentation by using technology as a means to distribute information.
I will measure student progress by daily feedback from teacher, guiding students to think of other alternative ways to convey information, and provide students with access to technology and time to complete project.
Students will brainstorm ideas and create ways to follow through with these activities.
Students will fill-out Peer Teaching Grading and Self-Evaluation sheet to grade progress.
Management:
Resources will be access to the computer lab daily, open space-tables for group work, gathering of a variety of resources like books, pamphlets, ads, etc., internet sites that are cleared, technology equipment, and art supplies.
Students will be given tables with all resources of the drug type and encouraged to only explore research for two days. Technology lab open the second day for information.
Students with needs will be given a specific job to focus on during this lesson. Modify amount information and help assist student in gathering information depending on needs.
Lesson Evaluation:
The lesson was very engaging to the students because the students were given free choices to create their own lessons.
I need to create a rubric to evaluate the student’s progress and visual poster, I-movie, power point, etc.
I need to closely monitor the student’s progress daily and watch closely the internet searching.
