Solutions to Some Common Problems in District 23
Problem: An application in OSX is frozen, or the spinning beach ball will not stop.
Solution: Any program can be forced to quit in OSX by pressing option+apple+esc, clicking the program name in the window, then clicking “force quit.”
Problem: When I type on my new computer some of the keys get repeated.
Solution: Open up system preferences and select "Keyboard and Mouse", select the keyboard section at the top, and move the sliders for both "key repeat rate" and "delay until repeat" down a couple notches.

Problem: When I print out PDF labels from the web (such as Power School, or Infocentre) they do not match the cutoff lines for the labels.
Solution:  When you go to print the labels there is a setting on the first screen of the print window called "Page Scaling".  Change the drop-down for "Page Scaling" to read "none".  Your labels should now print correctly.

Problem: I have had this AppleWorks document for 25 years.  But now when I print it on my new OSX computer the formatting is all messed up.
Solution: This can happen to older AppleWorks documents being printed inside AppleWorks 6.  Try opening AppleWorks and go to the AppleWorks menu and select "preferences" then "general".  Uncheck the box marked "fractional character widths", and try printing the document again.
Problem: My white iBook seems to go to sleep, but will not wake up.
Solution: Force a hard reset by unplugging the iBook, take out the battery, and press the power button a few times.  Next put the battery and plug back into the iBook, and power it on.

Problem: Unusually Slow and/or erratic behavior.
Solution: While there is no cut and dry solution to this one, a good start would be:
- Try a good old fashion reboot.  If the computer is frozen to the point that you cannot do a restart from the apple menu, hold the power button down until the computer shuts off.
- Try resetting the PRAM by restarting the computer and holding down option+apple+p+r together until you hear the startup chime at least twice.
- Repairing the disk permissions can solve strange intermittent problems.  To repair permissions open disk utility located in the applications/utilities folder, click on your hard drive in the left column, and click the “repair permissions” button.

Problem: I brought a cool new USB keychain drive (also known as jump drive, flash drive, pocket drive, etc) and it is giving me an error message about the memory being full, or the filenames being too long whenever I try to copy a file onto it.
Solution: Most USB drives come formatted for Windows 98 still.  To reformat the drive for OSX open disk utility located in the applications/utilities folder,
click on your USB drive in the left panel, click the "erase" tab at the top, type a name for the drive in the name field, and click the erase button.
Note that this will erase all data on the drive
Also note that you do not have to worry about accidentally erasing your computer's hard drive, as disk utility will not let you do this anyway.

Problem: "Every time I want to view a PDF file off the internet it downloads the file to my desktop.  Isn't there a way for them to display inside Safari without downloading the file?"
Solution: Install Adobe Acrobat Reader.  The installer can be found inside the "staff shared" folder on each school's fileserver.

Problem: When I print document suchandsuch all the margins are incorrect.
Solution: This can be caused by the printer having a hard time with a font used with in a document.  Try selecting all the text (edit menu+select all) and change the font to something universal like “times new roman” or “arial.”
