The tabs above will link you to assignments used in the computer curriculum at MacArthur. Each html or PDF document represents computer class assignments currently in use this year. The PDF files can be viewed by downloading Adobe Reader using the link here. Many of these assignments have been adapted from a variety of sources including text books, workshops, colleagues, and students. Some of the class assignments also require additional files that are only hosted on the classroom computer.
Computer Club has evolved into two components, Computer Helpers and Open Computer Lab. Computer Helpers assist others before school. Students interested in becoming a helper must fill out an application and be recommended by teachers. They can not receive D's or F's or check marks on their report cards. Open Lab is for any student interested in improving computer skills or in completing academic assignments meeting most Wednesday mornings before school at 7:00am.
This group teaches students the use of video equipment and serves as a resource to tape special events at MacArthur. It is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, but is limited in size, to about twelve. Selection is made by the supervisor based on interest and responsible behavior. Students will utilize iMovie, iStop Motion, Clay Animation, and other areas of individual interest. Students must maintain appropriate grades to stay in the club. This club begins second semester on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:15 am.
I have been a part of the MacArthur family since January of 1981. I started my teaching career as the industrial arts instructor (wood shop) and began working with computers in the mid 80's with the Apple IIe. It had a whopping 8-bit system that came with 4KB of memory! When the MacIntosh SE arrived to MacArthur with its 3.5 floppy, blazzing speed of 8 Mhz, and huge 40mb hard drive; I was hooked. I began teaching CAD drawing to 7th graders and when Mr. Caspari, the districts computer expert retired, I took over as computer teacher in the mid 90's. A lot has changed since those early years but one thing hasn't: if you are having a problem with a computer just ask a 12 year old!
I wear many hats here at MacArthur. I teach computers to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I am a 6th grade advisor. I sponsor a computer club (imagine that), a video club and coach track each spring. I am also the technology facilitator for our building and web master for the MacArthur home page.
So why the windmills in the background you ask? Well that has to do with my family history as my parents immigrated in 1952 from the Netherlands to Canada. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta on a blistery 60º below day in January a long long time ago.
