e-Suggestion Box

Please feel free to e-mail me any time you have a thought, idea, notion or suggestion on how we might improve life at MacArthur. (stlee@d23.org) We are open to any and all input from parents that might improve the school, or be an added benefit to students and staff. All suggestions will be evaluated for maximum benefit to the entire school. In fact, just announcing this is a suggestion from a parent. Some suggestions may be implemented right away, some after some modification….and some not at all, depending on the overall benefit. So……….get a think’n!

Brown Bag Lunch
The “Brown Bag Lunch” is a parent meeting during the day in which information about middle school students or opportunities and programs at MacArthur are shared between administration and parents or community members. We meet at noon, usually the 2nd Wednesday of the month (or the same day as the Board of Education meeting) for about an hour in the Mac Conference room. As the title suggests, we meet over lunch, so bring your favorite sandwich and join us as often as you can. Our next few BBL’s will be December 10th, January 14th and February 11th. I hope to see you there and don’t forget the chips!

Student Drop off/Pick up
Just a reminder to all parents who drop off or pick up students at or near the main entrance of MacArthur, that you should only do so at CURBSIDE. I am observing more and more students exiting or entering vehicles from the second lane in the parking lot. This creates a very hazardous condition for both the students and your vehicle. Please remember to drop off and pick up students ONLY along the curb. YOU… do not want to be responsible for an injured student or a door that gets ripped off the car. The process my take a bit longer but it’s a lot safer for our kids and your vehicle.

Thanksgiving and more

As the holiday season approaches, it is always good to reflect on the things we have. It’s a great time of year to give thanks to the people around us who support and nurture us throughout the year and who give us joy! I want to thank you for all your support of staff and programs at MacArthur and wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. Also, please be aware that we will be in school on Monday and Tuesday the week of Thanksgiving. The break begins on Wednesday, November 26th. Again, Happy Thanksgiving to all…even the turkeys!

Parent Access to grades 24/7
Just a reminder that you have 24/7 access to your child’s grades on-line. It is also a great way to check on homework and or long-term projects. Keep in mind that the final grade is usually a “weighted” grade. This means that homework, quizzes, test and project may account for a different percentage of the grade. Merely adding up the total points may not give you an accurate picture of the grade. Check with your individual teacher for the correct percentage for each category.

More Information
Remember to visit our website www.d23.org/macarthur for information regarding Mac news, upcoming dates and announcements. For additional information, please check your child’s backpack for teacher information and handouts each Friday.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education, the people to contact first would be your child’s teacher/team. They can either answer your questions directly or point you in the right direction. Staff e-mail addresses are posted on the MacArthur web site.

Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held at Mac the first week of December. Come to the LMC Monday, December 1 through Thursday, December 4, for the best selection of popular books available at bargain prices. The hours of the Book Fair will be 7:30 am – 3:00 pm. Shopping for books at the Book Fair is a good value for personal reading materials and a great way to complete holiday shopping for seasonal gifts! The MacArthur Book Fair is being held as a way to keep books important in our personal lives and the community of learners. Students, faculty and parents who read daily and consistently are more likely to be lifelong learners. Reading develops larger vocabularies, a greater knowledge of the world and high academic achievement. Research has shown that students who read independently everyday are better prepared for life's challenges that lie ahead and lead satisfying lives! We encourage everyone to shop the Book Fair and enjoy literacy!

Milk Tickets
Starting December 1, 2008, parents will be able to purchase a 20-punch milk card/ticket (green) for $11.00 for use in our lunch program. The purchase and use of these milk punch cards/tickets will work in the same manner as the lunch tickets. Tickets may be purchased in the morning hours from Ms. Rogers in the cafeteria.

Say Cheese
The "Say Cheese" club is sponsoring a Candy Cane Drive for the U.S.S. Roosevelt. If you are interested in spreading some cheer to sailors far away from home this holiday season, please bring boxes of candy canes or any type of other holiday candy to Mrs. Peckworth in room 202 by Tuesday, November 25. Boxes will be shipped on Wednesday. Please help us make the season brighter for Navy sailors serving in the Persian Gulf!

Happy Thanksgiving
