Athletics

Interscholastic Sports are for talented athletes. There are no tryouts for Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track and Field. All students, who wish to participate in these three activities, may do so. All other interscholastic activities have tryouts, and coaches select their teams based upon performance at the tryouts.  Academic eligibility requirements must be maintained for students to participate on sports teams. An annual physical examination is also required for participation on any interscholastic sports team.

Cross Country (6th, 7th, 8th grade boys and girls)

This sport generally begins on the first day of school and goes until late October. Practices are daily and most of the time after school. Some practices will be held in the mornings before school. All students, who attend Cross Country practices will be considered team members. Runners should have suitable shoes and come dressed appropriately for the weather. There will be competitive selection for certain meets.

Basketball (7th & 8th grade boys and girls)

This season begins immediately after the Cross Country season, in late October and runs through January. There are competitive tryouts with only 12 to 16 students usually making the team. There are daily practices, either in the mornings or after school. Occasionally, practices may be conducted over winter break, at the discretion of the coach. Athletes will remain on the team, if behavior and practice expectations are met. Appropriate shoes should be worn.

Volleyball (7th & 8th grade girls and boys)

This sport generally starts in late January after basketball and will conclude sometime in late March. This also has competitive tryouts with between 12 and 18 girls making the squad. Suitable shoes and knee pads are necessary. Practices are daily (a.m. or p.m.) and attendance is expected. Behavior and academic requirements are as above.

Wrestling (boys and girls of all levels on the same team)

Wrestling is a sport that begins in January after the winter break and continues on until the second week in March. Students may be asked to participate in conditioning up to two weeks prior to the start of the season. All grade levels are on one team, with actual meet participants being determined by ability at each individual weight class. In addition, exhibition matches may be set up at meets to allow for more participation. Practices are usually daily, but may be before or after school. All athletes will remain on the team, as long as grades and behavior are acceptable. Students will be provided uniforms and headgear, but will be encouraged to purchase wrestling shoes. Wrestlers may be competitively selected for conference and state meets.

Track (6th, 7th, 8th grade boys and girls)

Track generally begins in early spring and runs until late May. Conditioning may begin two weeks earlier. All students can be on the team, as long as appropriate grades and effort standards are met. The track events include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and the metric mile. In addition, there are relays, hurdles, and the four field events: shot put, discus, long jump, and high jump. Generally, the top three individuals participate in meets in any given event. The exception is the 800m and 1600m, where an unlimited number may run. Many beginning runners run these events and this should be expected. Runners need to purchase MacArthur running shirts, which will be available at the school during the season. Appropriate running shoes and practice clothing are expected and are the responsibility of the athletes. Practices are daily, either before school in the morning or after school in the afternoon. Participants in the conference and state meets will be competitively selected.
