Battle of the Books

We have separate sets of books for third, fourth, and fifth grade teams. There are 30 books in each set. (Click here to see lists.)

Each team should divide the set so that each book is read by at least one person on the team. The Captain will be in charge of keeping a record of who has read what. Captains should try to make sure that each book has been read once before team members start reading books someone on the team has already read. Learning authors can earn extra points for the team. Every team member must read and pass an AR quiz on at least one book in order to participate in the battle rounds.

The "Battle" will last for 2 weeks and one day.

•The first round of the battle will be held during the week of March 31, 2008.

•The second round of the battle will be held during the week of April 7, 2008.

•The winning teams will have Final Battles during the week of April 16, 2008.

Round #1:

1. The team captain will give the answers, although all team members can confer beforehand.

2. The first team will be asked 10 questions. The answers will all be book titles. To answer correctly and earn
5 points, the exact title must be given within 30 seconds.

3. If the team correctly identifies the title of the book, it can earn 1 additional bonus point by correctly identifying the author.

4. If the first team misses a book title question, the second team has a chance to answer it for 5 points. If that team  can't answer, the question stops there and remains unanswered. If the first team misses another question, the third team will have a chance to answer, and so on.

5. Each of the other teams, in order, will have a chance to answer 10 book title questions. Each time that team does not know the answer, another team will be given a chance to answer on a rotating basis.

Round #2:

1. This is a "Scramble Round." We will use electronic buzzers on each team's table. Anyone may buzz. Teams may  discuss answers before hitting the buzzer.  Once the team who has buzzed first has been identified, the answer must be given immediately without discussion by the person who buzzed. A team member may buzz before the whole question has been read, but must be ready to answer immediately without hearing the whole question.

2. Questions based on facts and situations in the books will be asked to the whole group. A correct answer is worth 5 points. If a team answers incorrectly, 5 points will be DEDUCTED from its score. No other team will be allowed to answer.

Final Battle Round

One winning grade level team from each class will compete in a shorter Final Battle for each grade level consisting of both Rounds 1 and 2. The questions will be different ones.

Winners of the Final Battles will be honored with a pizza lunch in the library in addition to the book they received for winning in their classroom. Students will need to provide their own drinks for the lunch.
