Where every child makes learning progress every day...

Brief description of our journey:
2006-2007
- During the
2006-2007 school year, the District 23 Board of Education created an
objective to review the Gifted and Talented Education Program.
- A Gifted
Committee, made up of teachers, administrators, and two board members
met to review research on best practice, discuss input from constituent
groups, and plan for improvements with the guidance of a facilitator.
- At the end of the 2006-2007 school year a recommendation was made to the Board of Education.
2007-2008
- During the current school year the revised Gifted and Talented Education Program is being implemented.
- There are two teachers who provide service to the students in grades three through eight.
- There are
critical thinking lessons taking place in second grade classrooms at
Ross and Eisenhower to determine if we want to expand the program to
every second grade classroom.
- Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade will receive services in reading and/or Math.
- Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade will receive services in social studies this year.
- All
teachers can request differentiation assistance from the gifted
resources teachers to aid in planning or implementing instruction.
2008-2009
- We are extending our services to the middle school students.
Teachers and an
administrator who have been trained through the Gifted Institute now
make up the Gifted Advisory Committee. The goal of the committee
is to analyze the revised program to determine if any changes need to
be made to meet the needs of the students. Criteria to qualify
for the Gifted and Talented Education Program will be looked at to
ensure that we are making opportunities available to meet all students'
needs. We will also be investigating the support given with two
gifted resource teachers and determine how to best utilize another
staff member at the middle school.
We are very excited to offer the program to better meet the needs of the students in District 23.
